It’s HOT – Stay Cool!

The National Weather Service has issued an EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING and Red Flag Advisory, effective from 11:00 pm Wednesday, and extending at least into Thursday. What Does This Mean? An Excessive Heat Warning signifies that temperatures are expected to reach levels significantly higher than average, potentially causing heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke. These conditions can affect anyone, but the elderly, children, and those with pre-existing health conditions are particularly vulnerable

How to Protect Yourself and Others: To ensure your safety and well-being, please follow these protective actions:

  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you do not feel thirsty. Avoid drinks with caffeine or alcohol, as they can lead to dehydration.
  • Limit Outdoor Activities: Try to stay indoors during the hottest parts of the day, typically between 10 AM and 4 PM. If you must be outside, take frequent breaks in the shade and wear lightweight, light-colored, and loose-fitting clothing.
  • Use Air Conditioning: Spend time in air-conditioned places. If you do not have air conditioning at home, consider visiting public places such as shopping malls, libraries, or community centers.
  • Check on Vulnerable Individuals: Make sure to check on elderly neighbors, family members, and friends who may be more susceptible to heat-related illnesses. Ensure they have access to cool environments and are staying hydrated.
  • Never Leave Children or Pets in Cars: Temperatures inside vehicles can rise rapidly, leading to severe heatstroke or death. Always check the backseat before locking your car.
  • Take Cool Showers or Baths: A cool shower or bath can help lower your body temperature. You can also use a damp cloth on your neck, wrists, and ankles to cool down.

How to Recognize Heat-Related Illnesses: It is crucial to recognize the signs of heat-related illnesses and take immediate action if you or someone else exhibits symptoms.

  • Heat Exhaustion: Symptoms include heavy sweating, weakness, cold, pale, and clammy skin, a fast/weak pulse, nausea or vomiting, and fainting. Move to a cooler location, drink water, and apply cool, wet cloths to the body.
  • Heat Stroke: Symptoms include a high body temperature (103°F or higher), hot, red, dry, or damp skin, a fast, strong pulse, and possible unconsciousness. Heat stroke is a medical emergency – call 9-1-1 immediately, move the person to a cooler environment, and try to cool them down with water or ice packs.
  • Pet Safety: Don’t forget about your pets during extreme heat. Ensure they have plenty of fresh water and access to cool, shaded areas. Avoid walking your pets during the hottest part of the day, and never leave them in parked cars.
