2 Acronyms You Should Know When Considering Hiring At Home Caregivers

Hand it to the health care industry to come up with yet another couple of acronyms to add to their extensive list – ADLs and IADLs. These are prevalent terms in the healthcare field used to describe the routine self-care activities that an individual engages in on a regular basis to stay independent and healthy. It is also common for these acronyms to appear in conversations if you are looking for in-home care options for an older person, or if you are researching the cost of long-term senior care for yourself or someone you know.

There’s No Cookie Cutter Approach to California Senior Care

The most wonderful thing about human beings is that every one of them is altogether unique, and that doesn’t change simply because of age. As we get older, we stay the unique and intricate individuals that we have been our whole lives. Assuming that all seniors will act the same and require the same things is a cookie cutter approach that just will not work for seniors or those who take care of them. Providing care to older individuals necessitates an innovative and careful approach that permits the caregiver to determine just who an older adult is and what his or her specific needs are to determine the best plan of care to keep the individual healthy and well at home.

Exploring Tri Valley Home Care Services Instead of a Nursing Home

“I never want to live in a nursing home.”

If you’re the child of an elderly parent, you’ve probably listened to your loved one speak those words or a similar sentiment signifying your parent’s wish to continue to age at home instead of moving to a long-term care facility. Truthfully, the majority of seniors want to remain in their own homes for as long as possible – for a variety of reasons. Home is the place they’ve lovingly created, so it’s where they feel the most comfortable. Living at home also brings meaning and purpose to one’s life. Something as simple as looking at one’s belongings, reading the mail, or relaxing on the porch are more meaningful in one’s own home than in a long-term care facility because it is the home that creates the framework of one’s life. … Read More »

Emergency Situation Status

Posted on October 13th, by Mark Winter in Homecare. No Comments

Hello from Hired Hands Homecare,

In the early hours of Monday morning, our lives were turned upside down.  The disaster moved very quickly, growing at enormous rates, leaving next to nothing in its path.  First and foremost, our thoughts and prayers continue to go out to all those affected by this terrible tragedy.

Both our Santa Rosa and Napa offices have been spared, but have been closed all week due to power outages and inconsistent conditions.  All North Bay operations have been run out of our Novato office.  Earlier today, we re-opened our Santa Rosa office, and the same is planned for Napa by Monday.

The ever changing situation has been extremely difficult.  Unfortunately, we have several elderly clients and families who have lost everything.  The same can be said for a number of our outstanding Caregivers.  We have evacuated families not sure … Read More »

Thoughts and Prayers for Safety!

Posted on October 9th, by Mark Winter in Homecare. No Comments

Our thoughts and prayers go out to our entire community during this tragedy.  Safety is priority one right now.  We are currently handling most all our operations from our Novato office.  If you are a Hired Hands Homecare Client or Caregiver, please try to check in by calling the office at 415-884-4343.  If you have NOT been evacuated, CHP is strongly requesting that you stay put, so that traffic can move as well as possible.  Contact your local City to check on evacuation centers.  We will all work together to take care of our people to the best of our abilities.

Sincerely,

The Hired Hands Homecare family.

Stand Up and Protect Yourself

  Greetings!

We hope this email notice finds you safe and well. Hurricanes Irma and Harvey have certainly consumed the press lately, and our thoughts and prayers continue to go out to those affected by these tragic storms.  At the same time, there has been recent news of troubling events, and we thought we would take the opportunity to touch upon them in hopes of protecting our amazing employees.

Last week Equifax, a leading credit reporting agency, announced a data breach that affected over 143 million consumers. Hackers breached their databases, and gained access to people’s critical private information including names, social security numbers, birthdates, addresses, and driver’s license numbers.  It is highly recommended that everyone visit and read Equifax’s website regarding this huge security concern.  You can even enter bits of your personal information to see if your data was possibly … Read More »

Beat the Heat! Important Considerations for Seniors and Caregivers

In the Bay Area, they’re forecasting TRIPLE DIGIT HEAT for the upcoming Holiday Weekend!

We all suffer in hot weather. However, for elderly and disabled people and those with chronic health conditions such as vascular disease or diabetes, the weather does not have to hit 100 degrees to cause heat stress or even deadly heat stroke.

As we age, we gradually lose the ability to perspire and regulate our body temperature. This is why older people tend to overdress — they don’t feel heat the same way anymore. Heart rates do not speed up-or return to normal-as fast during exercise. Older skin also thins and offers less protection from the sun. Poor circulation, heart, lung and kidney diseases, and high blood pressure increase the risk for heat-related illness. Being overweight or underweight also increases risk.

Medications taken for a variety of diseases … Read More »
