In a recent blog post, we shared the importance of squelching the impulse to take over and do everything for your senior loved one, and as much as possible, to promote his or her feelings of senior independence. While it’s no doubt easier said than done, there are some key steps you can take towards successfully achieving this goal:

Provide the motivation for the senior to do things for himself, even if that brings about feelings of reluctance or stubbornness, and even if tasks take a bit longer than you’d like.

They can be larger stages, such as leaving your parents’ home or getting married, or smaller stages, like completing tasks you didn’t think you were able to do. Hand it to the health care industry to come up with yet another couple of acronyms to add to their extensive list – ADLs and IADLs. These are prevalent terms in the healthcare field used to describe the routine self-care activities that an individual engages in on a regular basis to stay independent and healthy. It is also common for these acronyms to appear in conversations if you are looking for in-home care options for an older person, or if you are researching the cost of long-term senior care for yourself or someone you know.

It’s often human nature to deny that we need assistance, although the truth is that often we really do. This is especially true for older adults, who may not wish to confess they need help doing the everyday things that used to be a snap but now are getting to be more complicated. For loved ones, this can make recognizing that an older adult requires help more difficult to identify. The encouraging news is that there are tools that can help family members better determine when a senior needs help.

The most wonderful thing about human beings is that every one of them is altogether unique, and that doesn’t change simply because of age. As we get older, we stay the unique and intricate individuals that we have been our whole lives. Assuming that all seniors will act the same and require the same things is a cookie cutter approach that just will not work for seniors or those who take care of them. Providing care to older individuals necessitates an innovative and careful approach that permits the caregiver to determine just who an older adult is and what his or her specific needs are to determine the best plan of care to keep the individual healthy and well at home.

If you’re the child of an elderly parent, you’ve probably listened to your loved one speak those words or a similar sentiment signifying your parent’s wish to continue to age at home instead of moving to a long-term care facility. Truthfully, the majority of seniors want to remain in their own homes for as long as possible – for a variety of reasons. Greetings!

In 1994, Hired Hands Homecare was humbly small, not yet a year old.  In celebrating the Holidays, we welcomed our Employees and Client to join us for a small Open House in our office.  At the end of the day, one of our most amazing Caregivers presented a most simple and wonderful gift.

She said “Please accept this small token of appreciation.  It has been wonderful working with such great people, and doing such amazing things for the Seniors of our Community.  I don’t have much, but I very much want to present this to you as a gift during this Holiday.”
